It seems like at least a few times a week, I come across an editorial, message board post, or YouTube video that criticizes micro-transactions. For gamers who have been around for decades and grew up in an era where you purchased a full game that simply was as-is, it is sometimes surreal to be in the modern video game era of online gaming, patches and updates, and the ability to pay even more money in a game you’ve already purchased. First-person/third-person shooting games represent one of my favorite genres in video gaming. Even though the games mostly follow the same formula with some changes here and there, it doesn’t take away how fun these games are for me. Congratulations to the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB) for becoming champions in their respective leagues in 2020. Some dissenters would seek to take away both teams’ accomplishments due to the seasons being shortened, but teams still have to compete to earn their championships regardless of the circumstances. Is there an entertainment platform that a person can go where they can escape the constant barrage of media messages in regards to the upcoming United States presidential election? Or does such a platform exist where the people don’t have to be forced to constantly think about the ongoing issues within the country? It seemed like there was a time where gaming was able to avoid this. But when Rep. Alexandria Oscario-Cortez, D-N.Y., did a gaming live stream last week to advocate citizens voting in the November 4th election, I quickly realized that we are in a time when not even video gaming is exempt from politics.
