I hope that all of you are safe and enjoying your weekend as much as you can. Each year, we bear witness to an assortment of video game releases for gamers to consume. It doesn’t matter what genre you prefer, there will typically be a game that may appeal to you that will launch during each 365-day period.
The fall and winter typically bring on the release of some of the heavier hitters in gaming. Playstation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X make their debut during this holiday season. The new Marvel’s Avengers video game is slated to drop in September, Star Wars Squadron arrives in October and Cyberpunk 2077 is due in November. Yet neither of those three games appeal to me.
My most anticipated game coming toward the end of 2020 is LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. First off, I am a huge Star Wars fan. And it was the LEGO Star Wars Complete Saga game on the Xbox 360 that first introduced me to the world of Lego video games. The main reason I tried it was because I like Star Wars and enjoyed LEGOs as a kid. The game was also recommended to me by a good friend of mine who had played the game with his nephews and had a blast. After I played and finished the game, I had to admit that while the game was basic (LEGO games are geared mainly toward children), it was also very fun.
The reason LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will likely be a day one purchase for me is because it will be the only game that covers all nine main movies of the Skywalker story. Maybe they will also include content from the Clone Wars animated series and the other Star Wars related films such as Solo: A Star Wars Story and Rogue One. Even if they just stick with the nine films, the amount of content will be very substantial. And the way LEGO games pack in an insane amount of content makes me hopeful that Skywalker Saga will be no different. According to Craig Derrick, the game’s managing producer, Skywalker Saga will have around 500 characters with most of them able to be used in the game.
Next on my list is a game that also arrives in October, Watch Dogs: Legion. I was a fan of the first two Watch Dog games because they offered something different than the normal open world game experience. The way the games implemented hacking into the gameplay as a core mechanic rather than just settling for brawling and weapons was refreshing. Not to mention the hacking tools actually affect the environment around you as well. I also appreciate that the games were unique in that the first Watch Dogs took place in a modern adaptation of Chicago and Watch Dogs 2 featured a lead hacker character that was black. The newest Watch Dogs will take place in London and is supposed to have even more expansive hacking gameplay. This iteration of Watch Dogs will also allow you to play as multiple characters, a first for the series. I’m looking forward to it.
So far those are the only two upcoming titles that are catching my eye. With Marvel’s Avengers, I will wait until all of the characters are released and the game is complete before playing it. Also, I’m not one to hop on a new system right when it launches. So if I do invest in a PS5 or Xbox Series X, it will be at least a year or two after release. In the meantime, I still have a whole backlog of games to get through and finish. That will keep me busy for some time.
What are some games that you’re looking forward to this fall and winter season?
