BioWare vs Bethesda: A Time of Action RPG Excellence

Before there was The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, it was The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion that captured the imagination of gamers.

The first decade of the 2000s was a special time in gaming history. As a sports gamer, there was no better era as there was an assortment of sports games to scratch that virtual sports gaming itch. Another genre that really took off was the western role-playing game. As Japanese role-playing games began to wane a bit from their prominence throughout the 1990s and the early part of the 2000s, western RPGs were ascending to a more prominent status in gaming. This era gave us some darn great games that I believe have left a positive mark on gaming as a whole. Continue Reading

IN THE NEWS: Quick Update on Activision Blizzard Lawsuit

Activision Blizzard is currently battling a lawsuit that was recently filed by the state of California.

On Saturday, I did a post on the latest happenings within the ongoing story involving the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing’s (DFEH) lawsuit against Activision Blizzard. Filed on July 20th, the lawsuit (which you can view HERE) came on the heels of at least two years of an investigation where the government entity came across instances of unequal pay, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and other issues which indicated an unsafe working environment. Unfortunately, one instance involved a female employee committing suicide. Activision Blizzard responded to the allegations days later with a statement that dismissed the findings of the DFEH’s investigation as “inaccurate.” I included this full statement in my previous post. But Blizzard Co-Founder and former CEO Mike Morhaime made an apologetic post on social media over the weekend that gives credence to the mistreatment of the organization’s employees. IN THE NEWS: Game Industry Work Culture Needs Change

I know I’ve already posted today, but this is a post I wanted to make because of its impact not only on gaming but also on the lives of people who work within the industry. Because I stay on top of gaming news, I’ve been well aware of the recent civil lawsuit that the state of California has recently filed against Activision Blizzard. The suit alleges sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and infractions against California’s equal pay law. Being that Activision Blizzard’s corporate headquarters reside in Santa Monica, California, that is part of the reason for the state’s involvement. The Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) is the specific organization responsible for the filing after an investigation that lasted for two years. YouTuber YongYea has a detailed breakdown of this story in the video above and you can read the official news release from the DFEH by CLICKING HERE. IN THE NEWS: Does Nintendo Switch Now Have a Competitor?

Recently Valve revealed its new Steam Deck handheld device that will launch this December.

The handheld gaming market has long been dominated by Nintendo while mobile gaming has grown by leaps and bounds within the last decade. Sony has tried its hand in the market with the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the PlayStation Vita, but both systems have not been able to keep pace with Nintendo and mobile gaming. This is not to say that the two PlayStation handhelds aren’t quality systems in their own right. But they can’t compare with the other two platforms when it comes to the bottom line. Now Valve has entered into the handheld market with its newly announced Steam Deck, finally bringing a true handheld gaming device to PC gamers. Continue Reading

Don’t Let The Title “3 Out of 10” Fool You

3 out of 10 is a quirky free video game series that reminds me of 90s adventure games.

I’m always on the hunt for free games. They are in abundance these days. I remain in a state of shock at how the gaming industry has transformed since I was a child. During my formative years, being a consumer was simple. You bought a game and then you played it. There were no such things as free games or the ability to download extra content within a game. So the idea that we currently live in a time where free games are abundant always blows me away. Continue Reading
